"Tubthumping" is a song released by British stone ring Chumbawamba from their eighth studio album, Tubthumper (1997). It is the ring's most successful single, peaking at number two on the Great britain Singles Chart. At the 1998 Brit Awards, "Tubthumping" was nominated for the Brit Award for All-time British Unmarried. It sold 880,000 copies in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland.[2]

Groundwork [edit]

The song was the group'due south lead single from Tubthumper, their major-characterization debut.[3] Information technology was released on 11 August 1997.[4] [5] Vocalist Dunstan Bruce retrospectively observed that, before the group wrote it, they "were in a mess: nosotros had become directionless and disparate". He credited "Tubthumping" with changing that, telling The Guardian, "It'southward not our most political or best song, but information technology brought us back together. The vocal is about united states – as a grade and as a band. The dazzler of it was nosotros had no idea how big information technology would be."[vi]

Writing and composition [edit]

A Leeds pub called the Fforde Grene served as the grouping's inspiration for the song; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that it was written nigh "the resilience of ordinary people";[6] musically, "Tubthumping" is a dance-stone, alternative rock, and dance-punk song in D major.[7] [8] [9] [ten] [xi]

Critical reception [edit]

Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Some records simply need attention: 'Tubthumping' is one of the rare few. You lot can spend three times the track's running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and contrasted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-rock guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-fashion horns. Holding it all together are the kind of rousing, gang-like chants that you hear at football games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, you won't soon forget this jam after first listen. And you lot'll likely be hearing it on pop and modern rock stations for months to come. If this gem is indicative of the tone of the act's forthcoming album, it should be quite a head trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described information technology equally an "irritating catchy drinking anthem from the agitator ring".[13] It was also called a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European mag Music & Media said, "After a decade and a one-half spent every bit indie heroes this commonage is likely to intermission into the mainstream in a big way".[15] Ian Hyland of the Sunday Mirror rated information technology eight out of ten, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys volition exist making boozed-up man pyramids on the dance flooring in seconds. And yous'll take a monster striking – proficient work, chum."[sixteen] Troy J. Augusto from Variety declared it as a "drinking-and-dancing anthem" and "the quirk hit of the season".[17]

In The Village Vox's Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the 2d-best single of the year.[xviii] Australian radio station Triple J ranked it No. 3 in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the aforementioned year.[19] Author Bruce Pollock included it in his 2005 book "The 7,500 Near Of import Songs of 1944-2000".[twenty] "Tubthumping" likewise placed at No. 12 in Rolling Rock 'southward 2007 list of the "20 Most Annoying Songs"[21] and at No. 8 in the magazine's 2011 list of the "Top 10 One-Striking Wonders of All Time".[22]
